Military Life
Service to others has been a defining theme throughout Piet Wilhelm's life. Long before becoming a martial artist, business owner, mentor, or actor, Piet was drawn to a life of discipline, leadership, and service to his country.
His military journey began in 1990 when he enrolled in a military school, immersing himself in an environment that emphasized structure, accountability, and personal responsibility. Those early experiences helped shape the leadership qualities and work ethic that would become hallmarks of his character. In 1994, Piet earned an appointment to a United States Service Academy—an opportunity that placed him on a path toward becoming a commissioned officer.
However, driven by a desire to lead from the front and serve alongside those on the enlisted ranks, Piet made the uncommon decision to forgo a potential officer commission and instead enlist in the United States Marine Corps. It was a choice rooted in his sense of duty, commitment to service, and desire to experience military life from the ground level.
Throughout his Marine Corps career, Piet served in a variety of challenging and demanding assignments that allowed him to develop as both a leader and instructor. His service took him around the world, exposing him to different cultures, operational environments, and mission requirements. His deployments and overseas assignments included Diego Garcia, Bahrain, Turkey, Greece, Italy, Kosovo, Albania, and Panama, providing him with a broad perspective on military operations and international cooperation.
As his career progressed, Piet was entrusted with several key leadership and instructional roles that would leave a lasting impact on the Marines he trained and mentored. He served as a Combat Instructor, helping transform young Marines into capable warfighters. As a Water Survival Instructor, he taught Marines critical skills that could mean the difference between life and death in challenging environments. His passion for martial arts led him to become a Martial Arts Instructor, where he trained Marines in close-combat skills while reinforcing the warrior ethos and mental toughness required of those who wear the uniform.
One of the most influential chapters of his military career came when he was selected to serve as a Marine Corps Drill Instructor. Tasked with transforming civilians into United States Marines, Piet embraced the responsibility of instilling discipline, confidence, resilience, and the core values of Honor, Courage, and Commitment. The experience reinforced his belief that leadership is not simply about authority—it is about setting the example and helping others realize their potential.
Later in his career, Piet served as a Staff Non-Commissioned Officer responsible for preparing Marines for deployment to the Middle East. In this role, he helped ensure that Marines were physically, mentally, and professionally prepared for the challenges they would face in combat and operational environments. The responsibility of training and preparing others for deployment further strengthened his commitment to servant leadership and mentorship.
Throughout his years in uniform, Piet learned lessons that would continue to guide him long after leaving active service. The Marine Corps taught him the value of discipline, teamwork, accountability, perseverance, and selfless service. It also reinforced a belief that leadership is ultimately about investing in others and helping them succeed.
While his military service eventually came to an end, its influence never left him. The principles he learned as a Marine continue to shape his work as a martial arts instructor, business owner, men's ministry leader, husband, and father. Whether mentoring veterans, coaching students, guiding business owners, or serving his community, Piet draws upon the lessons of his military experience every day.
Today, he remains deeply committed to supporting the military and veteran communities, helping fellow service members navigate life's challenges while encouraging them to continue serving and leading in new ways beyond the uniform. For Piet, being a Marine was never just a career—it was a calling that helped shape the man he has become and continues to influence the legacy he hopes to leave for others.
