Martial Arts

Martial arts has been a defining part of Piet Wilhelm's life—a journey that began not with competition, but with a desire to overcome adversity and build confidence.

As a young boy, Piet experienced bullying and quickly learned that he would need to develop the strength and resilience to stand up for himself. His father instilled in him a mindset that would shape the course of his life: "No one is coming to save you." Rather than viewing those words as discouragement, Piet embraced them as a call to personal responsibility and self-improvement. Determined to become stronger physically and mentally, he began training in karate and boxing at an early age.

As he grew older, Piet expanded his martial arts training to include wrestling, judo, and No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu before joining the United States Marine Corps. The skills and discipline he developed through years of training would later prove invaluable during his military service. While serving in the Marines, Piet became an instructor in both Close Combat and the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program (MCMAP), helping train fellow Marines in the principles of combat readiness, discipline, and the warrior ethos.

After leaving the Marine Corps, Piet remained committed to lifelong learning and continued expanding his knowledge in Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. His martial arts journey led him to train under respected instructors who would have a lasting impact on both his technical development and personal growth.

One of the most influential figures in Piet's journey was Henrique Stefani, who recognized his dedication and promoted him to both blue belt and later purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. When Henrique eventually returned to Brazil, Piet continued his training under Master Renato Tavares, Henrique's instructor and one of the most respected names in the sport.

Under Renato's guidance, Piet's journey continued for many years. Renato promoted him to brown belt and, after years of dedication, perseverance, and service to the art, awarded him the rank of black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Beyond rank and achievement, Piet values the strong friendship, mentorship, and loyalty he has shared with Renato Tavares throughout the years.

Throughout his martial arts career, Piet has believed that training should be tested through experience. This belief led him to compete in both Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, where he challenged himself against skilled opponents at local, national, and international levels.

Over the years, Piet has competed extensively throughout the United States and abroad, experiencing both victories and defeats along the way. Like many dedicated competitors, he learned that growth is often found in adversity. The lessons gained through preparation, competition, winning, and losing helped shape his character and reinforced the values of humility, resilience, and continuous improvement.

His accomplishments include earning multiple IBJJF Open Championship Gold Medals, becoming an IBJJF Pan Jiu-Jitsu Championship Bronze Medalist, and a U.S. National Championship Medalist. While he is grateful for these achievements, Piet views competition not as the ultimate goal but as a vehicle for personal growth and self-discovery. The experiences gained on the competition mats and in the cage continue to influence how he teaches, mentors, and leads others today.

As the owner and operator of Triton Fight Center, Piet has dedicated himself to helping others discover the same confidence, discipline, and resilience that martial arts gave him. What began as a place to teach martial arts has evolved into a community dedicated to personal development, leadership, and lifelong learning.

Over the years, Triton Fight Center has become a launching point for many successful martial artists, instructors, and entrepreneurs. Several individuals who trained under Piet have gone on to open and operate their own academies throughout the region. His influence extends beyond his own school, as he has provided mentorship, counseling, and business guidance to numerous academy owners, helping them navigate challenges and build thriving martial arts communities.

For Piet, martial arts has never been solely about belts, medals, or titles. It is about developing character, building confidence, serving others, and continually striving to become a better version of oneself. From a young boy seeking the confidence to overcome bullying, to a Marine instructor, competitor, academy owner, mentor, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, his journey reflects a lifelong commitment to discipline, perseverance, and the transformative power of martial arts.

Today, Piet continues to train, teach, and learn, remaining dedicated to the principles that first drew him to martial arts: humility, accountability, courage, and service. His mission is simple—to help others discover their own strength and potential, both on and off the mats.
